The Team
The project is led by Loren B
Landau, a social scientist at the
University of the Witwatersrand in
Johannesburg and the University of
Oxford. The Atlas is co-edited with
Caroline Wanjiku Kihato, an urban
sociologist and visiting fellow with Oxford’s Department of International
Development. She was the project
leader for You Will Find Your People
Here, an interdisciplinary installation
at the 2023 Venice Architectural
Biennale. Statistical support
and data analysis is provided by Kabiri
Bule, a researcher with the African
Centre for Migration & Society in
Johannesburg. The project’s artistic
engagements are coordinated by
Carina Kanbi, co-founder of Aya
Editions in Accra. Tanya Pampalone is heading up communications and partnerships. She is supported by Sophie Losue who is responsible for project operations. Data visualisations are led by Laura Kurgan at the Centre
for Spatial Analysis at Columbia University. Design is by Fred Swart
and Naadira Patel, two Johannesburg-
based artists and designers, renowned
for their exceptional work on the
visual language, maps, and books.
